Chiropractic and Massage Therapy FAQs

Massage, or soft tissue therapy, complements Chiropractic care. Tight muscles can cause a greater loss of mobility, pain and stiffness when they are situated around an inflamed or irritated joint. By treating all of the connecting structures; muscles, tendons and joints, we believe we can provide a more comprehensive, successful and longer lasting treatment.

Massage therapy is not always a part of Chiropractic care. Remedial or sports massage therapy is a separate modality to Chiropractic care primarily aimed at soft tissue complaints. Chiropractors traditionally focus on joints, particularly of the spine, to relieve pain, reduce stiffness and improve function.  At Metro Chiropractic Clinic, we combine these two options to provide better patient healthcare outcomes.

While massage is mainly thought of as a complementary or natural therapy offered by massage clinics or wellness spas, here at Metro Chiropractic Clinic they are considered an essential part of a clinical treatment plan.

A Doctor of Chiropractic is a five year, university trained primary contact practitioner (which means they can see patients without a referral from a GP). They focus on treating the spine by using their hands to examine and treat musculoskeletal health conditions, those related to the bones, muscles and joints of the body.

Here at Metro Chiropractic Clinic, our highly experienced Chiropractors have also been additionally trained in soft tissue therapy techniques including massage.

Soft tissue work involves massage, stretching and other techniques to reduce tissue tension. Benefits of soft tissue work can include a decrease in pain, stiffness and swelling, and an increase in tissue mobility and function.

At Metro Chiropractic Clinic we believe that providing soft tissue work to relieve muscle-based tension prior to Chiropractic adjustments improves the effectiveness of a treatment.  We can see first-hand with pre and post treatment assessments how beneficial a combined treatment is in relation to joint mobility, pain and overall function.

Initially our Chiropractor’s will use various tests to identify a joint that has a painful or limited range of motion. An adjustment is a stretch based movement that causes both physical and neurological adaptations in how it feels and moves. Chiropractors use a range of adjustment techniques to allow restricted joints to move more freely.

A Chiropractor is a Doctor of Chiropractic who has the education and skills to detect, diagnose, and treat various spinal related and musculoskeletal problems by using manual therapy.

A Chiropractor’s goal is to identify the source of the problem in order to alleviate pain and improve function. This includes a thorough examination of your spine and nervous system. The doctor will then use gentle manual adjustments to improve the function of your spine, which can help reduce pain and improve your overall health.

People often visit a Chiropractor for help with back and neck pain, headaches, injuries and joint stiffness. Other conditions include:

  • Lower back pain
  • Mid and upper back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Poor posture and posture related problems
  • Hip pain
  • Disc pain/disc related conditions
  • Some headaches and migraines
  • Wry neck
  • Sciatica or nerve pain
  • A range of sporting injuries
  • Muscular pain and tension

If you don’t see your condition or symptom on this list, please get in touch and one of our chiropractors will discuss whether we may be able to help you.
